‘Discomfort’ – Andoni Iraola confirms injury blow for Liverpool summer signing
The Andoni Iraola era at Liverpool is well underway as they prepare for their pre-season friendly against Leeds United later today.
After securing wins against Wrexham and Sunderland, the Reds can take another step in the right direction with a win against Daniel Farke’s side.
Iraola confirmed last week that Joe Gomez is injured and will miss the first few weeks of the season.
This is obviously a massive blow as Giovanni Leoni is still working his way up from his ACL injury, while Virgil van Dijk only returned to the squad a few days ago.
And now, the Spaniard has provided an injury update on new signing Jeremy Jacquet, who hasn’t featured for the club so far since joining from Rennes.
Jeremy Jacquet Liverpool injury blow confirmed
Earlier in the summer, Iraola claimed Liverpool are taking a cautious approach with Jacquet as he attempts to get to grips with his new surroundings.
He was scheduled to make his debut against Leeds, but it appears as if that won’t be the case.
“With Jeremy we still don’t know if it’s worth it or not to put him in against Leeds,” said the Liverpool boss in his pre-match press conference.
“He did the first part of the pre-season, let’s say, very well. Now he’s feeling some discomfort, so we don’t want to rush him. He comes from a lot of months without playing.

“And obviously I would like to try with him with Virgil [van Dijk] when he recovers, because with the injury of Joe [Gomez] we’ve been without senior centre-backs. But we have to be careful with Jeremy, yes.”
Judging by Iraola’s comments, Jacquet isn’t out for the long haul. Rather, he’s just working his way back up to full fitness and will likely be given time to make an impression.
That said, Liverpool are desperately short of options at the back, so it’ll be interesting to see who features against Leeds later today.
