Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler says he is “sorry to see” Danny Welbeck leave the club to join Chelsea after the former Manchester United star made the shock move to London.
The 35-year-old has signed a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea reached an agreement with Brighton, adding one of the Premier League’s most experienced forwards to Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the new season. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed.
Welbeck arrives following arguably the finest goalscoring campaign of his career, scoring 14 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions for Brighton last season while helping the Seagulls challenge for European qualification.
His form convinced CHELSEA that he still has plenty to offer despite becoming one of the oldest players in the squad.
And after seeing the striker leave, Hurzeler has opened up and admitted that he is sad to see the striker leave. The German said: “It’s always sad to see a player and a person of Danny’s stature leave, and we are all sorry to see him go.
“Danny has been a pleasure to work with from the moment I arrived at the club. His professionalism, attitude and commitment set the standard here every day, and he has been a fantastic support to me, personally.
“As well as the quality he brought on the pitch, he was an important leader within the squad and a role model for our younger players. We are grateful for everything he has done for the club and wish him all the very best for the future.”
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom added: “Danny has made an incredible contribution to Brighton & Hove Albion during his six years with the club.
“His performances, goals and experience played a key role in some of the most important moments in our recent history, while his character and leadership made him a hugely respected figure within the club.
“On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank Danny for his outstanding service and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”
Welbeck brings a wealth of top-flight experience to Stamford Bridge, having made more than 400 Premier League appearances during spells with Manchester United, Arsenal, Watford and Brighton. He has also won the Premier League title, two League Cups, the FA Cup and represented England on 42 occasions, scoring 16 international goals.
CHELSEA believe his leadership, professionalism and versatility across the forward line will strengthen the squad both on matchdays and on the training ground. The striker is expected to join his new teammates immediately as preparations continue for the 2026-27 campaign under Alonso
