Chelsea have confirmed the signing of striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion on a two-year contract, adding a vastly experienced Premier League forward to Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the new season.

The 35-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge after an impressive spell with Brighton, where he established himself as a key figure both on and off the pitch. His leadership, work rate and ability to link play made him an influential member of the Seagulls’ squad, while he continued to demonstrate his quality in front of goal despite the latter stages of his career.

Welbeck brings more than a decade of Premier League experience, having previously represented Manchester United, Arsenal, Watford and Brighton. A product of Manchester United’s academy, the England international won two Premier League titles, the League Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Old Trafford before moving to Arsenal in 2014.

He later enjoyed a spell at Watford before joining Brighton, where he helped the south coast club establish itself as a consistent top-half side and European contender.

CHELSEA said Welbeck’s experience and professionalism would provide valuable support to a youthful squad, with the striker expected to offer competition across the front line while also mentoring the club’s emerging attacking talent.

Speaking after completing the move, Welbeck said he was excited by the opportunity to join one of England’s biggest clubs and contribute to the team’s ambitions.

“It feels great to be here,” he said. “Chelsea is a club with huge ambition and I’m looking forward to helping the team in every way I can. There is a lot of quality in the squad, and I can’t wait to get started.”

CHELSEA‘s sporting leadership welcomed the arrival of the veteran forward, highlighting his winning mentality, versatility and wealth of experience at the highest level.

Welbeck has earned more than 40 caps for England, scoring 16 international goals and representing his country at major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship.
