River Plate have opened talks with Manchester City over a potential deal for Claudio Echeverri this summer.
According to El Intransigente, the Argentine side are trying to secure the 20-year-old on loan for the season.
Big transfer plan
The outlet explains that Claudio “Diablito” Echeverri left a significant mark on the club during his time there. He is considered one of the greatest talents to emerge from the youth academy in recent years.
But his move to Europe is yet to take off. The fierce competition at Manchester City means he is yet to establish himself at the Etihad. Instead, he has had unsuccessful loan spells away, first at Bayer Leverkusen and then Girona last season.
River believe they can take advantage of this. Their feeling is that a loan return would be an ideal opportunity for all parties involved.
The logic is clear too. Echeverri would get regular minutes, feel important again and regain the confidence that made him one of Argentina’s standout prospects.
Hopes rising
He would also not require any adjustment period given the years he already spent at the Monumental, rising through their youth ranks to the first team.
The main challenge lies in convincing Manchester City. They need to weigh up whether a return to Argentina at this point is advisable. They would, presumably, prefer him to continue to try and establish himself in Europe.
But the Argentinian club believe that they can offer a sporting project which can appeal to the player and his club. Claudio Echeverri will also play a decisive role. He needs to decide if he thinks returning would be best. Talks may be dependent on what stance he takes.
For now, talks are underway and the ‘hopes are rising’ at River Plate at least. The club’s leadership know bringing him back would be a major statement and they are working to try and make it happen.
