Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira has reportedly informed the club’s hierarchy that he wants to complete a permanent move to Hamburg following a successful loan spell with the Bundesliga side.
The Portuguese playmaker is said to have made his intentions clear to the Gunners’ board as he looks to secure regular first-team football after spending last season on loan in Germany. Vieira is understood to have enjoyed both his football and life at Hamburg, with the club now keen to make the deal permanent ahead of the new campaign.
Vieira joined ARSENAL from Porto in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth around £34 million, arriving with a reputation as one of Portugal’s brightest creative talents. However, despite showing flashes of quality during his time in north London, he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Mikel Arteta.
Competition for places in Arsenal’s midfield has remained fierce, with Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice and Mikel Merino among the first-choice options. As a result, Vieira found opportunities limited and was allowed to leave on loan in search of consistent playing time.
His spell at Hamburg appears to have revitalised his career, with the attacking midfielder reportedly becoming an important figure in the German club’s squad. His technical ability, vision and creativity impressed supporters and coaching staff alike, prompting Hamburg to explore the possibility of keeping him beyond the end of his temporary stay.
According to reports, Vieira now believes a permanent transfer represents the best move for his career. At 26, the Portugal international is keen to play regularly and continue building on the momentum he generated during his season in the Bundesliga.
For Arsenal, Vieira’s departure could help streamline the squad while generating funds to reinvest elsewhere during the transfer window. The Gunners continue to strengthen in key areas as they aim to compete for major honours both domestically and in Europe, and player sales are expected to form part of the club’s transfer strategy.
