Danny Welbeck says he is relishing the opportunity to begin a new chapter at Chelsea after completing his move from Brighton & Hove Albion, with the experienced striker insisting he is ready to give everything for his new club.
The 35-year-old has signed a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea reached an agreement with Brighton, adding one of the Premier League’s most experienced forwards to Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the new season. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed.
Welbeck arrives following arguably the finest goalscoring campaign of his career, scoring 14 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions for Brighton last season while helping the Seagulls challenge for European qualification. His form convinced CHELSEA that he still has plenty to offer despite becoming one of the oldest players in the squad.
In a statement on the club’s website, Welbeck said: “When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride. Knowing the history of Chelsea, it’s a club that wants to win trophies and is pushing to do that every single season.
“I’m really honoured to come to a club of this stature at what feels like a really exciting time.
“I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection
“I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”
Will Welbeck be a good signing?
Danny Welbeck may not be the glamorous signing Chelsea fans expected, but he could prove to be one of the smartest additions to the squad. At 35, Welbeck brings something CHELSEA have lacked in recent years: experience, leadership, and reliability.
His recent move from Brighton has surprised many, but it reflects a shift in Chelsea’s recruitment strategy towards adding balance rather than simply collecting young talent.
Welbeck’s goal record has never been extraordinary, yet his value extends far beyond statistics. His intelligent movement, work rate, and willingness to press from the front make him an ideal player for a manager who demands tactical discipline.
He also has over 400 Premier League appearances, meaning he understands the pressures of English football better than most players in Chelsea’s dressing room
