Newcastle United are already making preparations in anticipation of Bruno Guimaraes soon completing a switch to Arsenal. The Magpies are putting plans in motion to sign a new midfielder for incoming boss Matthias Jaissle, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Jaissle is poised to be announced as Eddie Howe's replacement at St James' Park, with the German manager already stationed in La Manga for the Magpies' pre-season training camp. The 38-year-old arrives from Al Ahli with fewer than three weeks to go before the Premier League campaign kicks off.
Speculation surrounding Guimaraes' potential transfer to Arsenal continues to gather pace. Our sister site, Chronicle Live, understands that a reported £80.4million agreement had not been reached and no formal offer had been submitted on Saturday.
Jaissle is anticipated to have discussions with Guimaraes, who is scheduled to travel to La Manga on Sunday to link up with his colleagues. Whether the new manager can prove convincing enough to keep the Brazilian satisfied at St James' Park remains to be seen.
Reports suggest that Guimaraes is set to undergo a medical with Arsenal as early as Monday, with the former Lyon midfielder poised to sign a five-year contract with the north London club.
Newcastle have already signed two central midfielders this summer in Sean Steur, 18, and Aladji Bamba, 20, from Ajax and Monaco respectively this summer. However, neither can reasonably be anticipated to replace the void that would be created by Newcastle skipper Guimaraes, given his considerable impact on the side.

Newcastle have been linked with several midfielders this summer, including Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha, Japan international Kaishu Sano, Stuttgart's Angelo Stiller and Swedish duo Hugo Larsson and Lucas Bergvall.
Arsenal remain linked to deals for Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior and Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez amid their bid to sign Guimaraes. The north London side have shown plenty of ambition in the run-up to their title defence.
Asked about Arsenal's transfer prospects, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta indicated he expected the Gunners to make more signings. "Well, we are really active, trying to improve and evolve the team, he said.
"That's clear. We expect to have movements in the next few weeks, obviously, because we want to get better like anybody else.
"And you can just see it. The transfer market and our opponents, what we are doing, we won't sit still. And we are very ambitious in what we want to do."
"We need to make sure we identify the things that we don't have in the team, to have bigger margins," he added. "And that's the way we have to think."
