Arsenal handed major fitness boost as new arrival now imminent

Defenders recovering from late-season injuries provide an important lift once they complete their first competitive minutes. Captaining the side on return underlines both fitness and leadership value. Managers welcome the gradual reintegration of senior players as pre-season progresses.

Right-backs capable of covering multiple positions become especially useful when other defensive options remain unavailable. Positive feedback after a solid hour of action eases concerns heading into the next fixtures. Additional returns in the coming days further strengthen the available group.

Ben White has handed Arsenal a significant fitness boost after completing 60 minutes in the 4-1 pre-season win over Girona. The defender captained the side in the absence of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice and came through the outing unscathed.

It was White’s first appearance since suffering a knee injury against West Ham towards the end of last season, which caused him to miss the final Premier League matches and the Champions League final. He returned after the final whistle to lift the Costa Brava trophy.

With Jurrien Timber not fully fit and William Saliba set to miss the start of the season, White’s availability at right-back and as potential central cover is particularly valuable. Mikel Arteta expressed satisfaction with the overall performance and the progress made during the week.

“I’m very pleased,” Arteta said. “In many aspects, obviously, we have worked on a lot of things this week with a big group of players, with the senior players that we had, with the Brazilians that returned during the week, with a lot of our academy players as well.

“A lot of things that we wanted to test, especially during the game – they were delivered in a brilliant way and overall very happy.

“Yes, and we’re going to start to get a few more players as well and the players that joined, they look in good shape. Obviously, there are a lot of things to evolve and improve as a team, but I think we’re in the right direction.”

Odegaard’s return to training is imminent after the Norway captain’s World Cup exit on 11 July. He is unlikely to feature against Real Betis in Dublin on Wednesday but will increase the options available. Several academy players also received minutes against Girona.

Supporters will be encouraged by White’s successful return and the steady arrival of more senior players. Arsenal continue to build fitness and cohesion as they prepare for the Community Shield and the start of the Premier League defence. Further positive updates on the remaining absentees are expected in the coming days.
