There’s a big decision to be made on behalf of the club by those involved with ongoing transfer negotiations.
Stick or twist is the best way of putting it, in other words stop wasting time on the complicated deals that have only a 50% chance of completion in favour of deals that can be made.
I’m referring to Julian Alvarez and Vinicius Jnr, both of which are taking more time than they are worth.
I’m not completely bowled over by the prospect of the arrival of both in all honesty.
Not because of the sums involved, which are completely ridiculous, but because I just don’t think they fit.
Their names raise the clubs profile, show intent and ambition but if they need that much convincing to come to the premier league champions of England then cut them loose, walk away and pursue the other targets.
I’ve not been swept away with all the hubbub of the possible acquisition of big names, I’m used to these transfer windows where they roll out the headline stars identity only to find it was just bullshit and bluster.
Yes, Arsenal have shown interest in both but it appears the players and clubs are less so with Alvarez preferring Barcelona and Vinicius Jnr hoping to play a meaningful role at Madrid under Jose Mourinho.
Alvarez is also reported to be on PSG’s shopping list which has yet to be confirmed and whilst I understand the player considering his best option there needs to be some evidence that Arsenal are on a par with the others in the hunt for his signature.
In the past we’ve hung around for targets, put all our eggs in one basket and ended up scrambling around in whats left of the transfer window.
There’s been no indication that either of these deals are progressing or what the clubs intentions are, so make the offer and if it’s not looking likely walk away.
Arsenal are prepared to meet the price within reason but if the player is unconvinced then why bother.
I’m speculating because noone apart from the parties involved really know how far down the pipe we are in terms of negotiations but if we are facing a brick wall then it’s time to face away.
Fans will be disappointed but that will fade if they apply common sense and financial logic to the scenario and if Arsenal bring in emerging talent for a fraction of the price whilst still remaining competitive.
The club will be criticised for not following in the steps of chequebook Chelsea but they finished 10th last season with latest reports suggesting a spend of over £1.5billion.
Fat fees on big names are no guarantee of success.
