Chelsea officially announce Valentin Barco signing from Strasbourg
Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Valentin Barco from RC Strasbourg, with the Argentina international signing a contract until 2033.
The signing adds another versatile option to Xabi Alonso’s squad following the 21-year-old’s breakthrough season in France.
Chelsea confirmed Barco’s arrival on Sunday and revealed he will join Alonso and his new team-mates later in pre-season. The club have not disclosed a transfer fee.
Barco arrives at Stamford Bridge after contributing to 12 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions for Strasbourg last season.
His performances also earned him a place in Argentina’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, and he now has five senior international caps.
Barco began his career with Boca Juniors and made his professional debut aged just 16.
He moved to Brighton in 2024 before spending time on loan with Sevilla and Strasbourg. His spell in France proved transformative, and Strasbourg subsequently signed him permanently after qualifying for European football.
Barco has also developed significantly from the player who originally arrived in England.
Although he established himself as a left-back in Argentina, the youngster has increasingly operated in midfield and gives Alonso several potential options on the left side.
His arrival adds to an already significant Chelsea summer rebuild.
ReadChelsea’s complete summer transfer roundup details a window which has already brought Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Danny Welbeck to Stamford Bridge alongside several previously agreed arrivals.
Barco now joins that group after a transfer which had been expected for several months.
ReadChelsea reported in May that Fabrizio Romano had given the deal his “here we go” and expected Barco to form part of Alonso’s first-team squad.
The remaining question is exactly where Alonso intends to use him.
Chelsea officially describe Barco as a midfielder, but his experience centrally and on the left could make him particularly valuable within the manager’s flexible system.
