Danny Welbeck’s move to Chelsea is one of the surprises of the summer.
The Blues recently announced the striker’s arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion, with Xabi Alonso looking to add more experience to his squad.
Jordan Henderson is now expected to join Welbeck at Stamford Bridge, which will give Alonso another seasoned pro he can call upon in the new season.
Henderson is set to sign for Chelsea on a free transfer after Brentford agreed to release the midfielder from his contract. As for Welbeck, Chelsea also got a very good deal for him.

According to the Daily Mail, Welbeck cost his new employers “next to nothing”. The striker is 35 now, but bringing him in for a nominal fee is still great business.
Welbeck has a lot to offer both on the pitch and in the dressing room. Last season, the former England international scored 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances. That is more than what Cole Palmer managed and only two fewer than Joao Pedro.
In his first interview as a Chelsea player, Welbeck spoke about helping young players and his eagerness to do that after amassing plenty of experience in the game.

Looking at his goal record from the previous campaign, Welbeck is clearly still capable of making a huge impact at this level. Chelsea are well aware of that after conceding three goals against the ex-Brighton striker last term.
However, he will have to play second fiddle to Pedro, who was in stunning form during the 2025/26 season and remains the team’s first-choice centre-forward. The Brazilian has also impressed in Chelsea’s pre-season tour, scoring a hat-trick against Western Sydney Wanderers.
All in all, Chelsea can be pleased with their purchase of Welbeck. He has not cost them much and should make a difference for them both on the pitch and behind the scenes.
