Former Chelsea defender Wayne Bridge has suggested he would not be surprised to see Cole Palmer eventually make a move to Manchester United, adding further fuel to the growing speculation surrounding the England international’s long-term future.
Palmer has repeatedly been linked with a potential switch to Old Trafford, with reports claiming United admire the attacking midfielder and could consider a move in the future. However, Chelsea have consistently maintained that their star player is a key part of their plans, with Palmer tied down to a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge.
Bridge, who made more than 100 appearances for Chelsea during a successful spell at Stamford Bridge, believes Palmer’s background and personal connection to Manchester could make a future return to the north-west a realistic possibility.
The former England left-back acknowledged that modern football can make long-term loyalty difficult, particularly when elite players are linked with clubs they have supported or admired from a young age.
Palmer is known to have grown up in the Manchester area and has previously spoken about his roots in the city, factors that have contributed to ongoing speculation over a possible Manchester United transfer
‘It probably makes sense for Cole Palmer because he’s a Man United fan,’ Bridge told 10bet. ‘But personally, I don’t know him, so I wouldn’t know what he’s thinking.
‘It might make sense for Manchester United – every club would love to take Cole Palmer – but it doesn’t make sense for CHELSEA. As an ex-Chelsea player, I’d be gutted if he went there.
‘I’d have a word with him and say, “Look, remember what happened to Mason Mount — come on now, don’t go anywhere. He’s the main man at Chelsea. Chelsea wants to build the team around Cole Palmer.’
Manchester United’s reported interest has continued to attract attention, although recent reports have suggested the club have not prioritised a summer move and may focus their resources elsewhere.
CHELSEA, meanwhile, are looking to build around Palmer as they attempt to establish a more competitive squad. Manager Xabi Alonso has highlighted the importance of developing an attacking partnership between Palmer and new signing Morgan Rogers, reinforcing the view that the club see the playmaker as central to their future plans.
