Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has already spoken to Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior regarding a potential move to the club this summer, according to Spanish outlet AS.
The Gunners have so far signed Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie and Illan Meslier this summer, and they are close to landing the signature of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United.
Arsenal are also focused on signing Guimaraes’ compatriot Vinicius from Los Blancos. AS claim Arteta has told the Madrid star that the club’s 2026/27 project would largely revolve around him.
The 26-year-old is now aware of the ‘real interest’ from the Gunners. A final decision will be made after his meeting with Real Madrid directors, given his contract expires in the summer of 2027.
Vinicius wants to continue with Los Blancos, but a fresh contract impasse could see him sold. It could take at least £129 million to prise him away from Madrid during the ongoing transfer window.
The 26-year-old is widely regarded as the best left winger in world football. He had a fine campaign with Madrid last term, scoring 22 goals and providing 14 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions.
Brazil were eliminated at the round of 16 stage of the World Cup against Norway, but Vinicius stood out for the Selecao. The Flamengo graduate notched up four goals and an assist in five matches.
He is scheduled to return to Madrid’s pre-season training today and looks set to hold face-to-face talks with new manager Jose Mourinho as well as the club’s hierarchy regarding his contract situation.
As per The Athletic, there is a sizeable gap of £8.7m in annual net salary between the player and Madrid. The forward appears prepared to reduce his yearly wage demands, but Madrid may still need to increase their contract offer, which has stood at £17m per year (net) for a substantial period of time.
If there is no progress, Arsenal will be more optimistic of striking a deal, given Los Blancos don’t want to lose their prized asset on a free transfer next year. For now, Arsenal have to play the waiting game and find out what happens during the upcoming round of contract talks between Vinicius and Madrid.
