Chelsea have wrapped up the signing of Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria, according to reports in Spain.
CHELSEA are understood to be exploring the market for defensive reinforcements ahead of the new Premier League season, with Chavarría emerging as one of several players under consideration. Reports suggest that initial contact had been made between the two clubs, and now Chelsea have sealed a deal for the star.
The Spaniard has established himself as one of Rayo Vallecano’s most reliable performers since arriving from Real Zaragoza. Known for his energy, defensive discipline and willingness to support attacks from the left flank, Chavarría enjoyed another consistent campaign in La Liga, attracting interest from clubs outside Spain.
Chelsea’s interest comes as the club evaluates its options at left-back. While the squad already includes several players capable of operating in the position, injuries and tactical flexibility have prompted the club’s recruitment team to assess additional reinforcements during the transfer window.
Chavarría is viewed as an experienced option who could provide immediate competition while also fitting the high-intensity style Chelsea are expected to employ. His ability to cover large areas of the pitch, deliver crosses from wide positions and contribute defensively has reportedly impressed the club’s scouting department
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the two teams have shaken hands on a €25million (£21.4m) – plus bonuses – deal for the 28-year-old full-back.
The move represents the most expensive sale in Rayo Vallecano’s history and is set to be officially announced ‘in the coming hours’ once Chelsea and Rayo Vallecano have ironed out the last remaining details.
Whether Chavarría becomes Chelsea’s preferred option remains uncertain, with the Blues continuing to assess multiple targets across Europe.
It has been a busy start to the transfer window for CHELSEA, who have also secured deals for Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck and Valentin Barco – whose arrival was announced on Sunday evening.
Geovany Quenda has also joined up with Alonsos first-team squad for the new season after Chelsea reached an agreement with Sporting for the winger back in March.
