Fabrizio Romano confirms major Cody Gakpo and Tottenham Hotspur news

Fabrizio Romano has provided a “key” update on Cody Gakpo amid concrete Tottenham Hotspur interest.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side has made plenty of signings already and their aggressive summer recruitment has now turned to the Liverpool forward.

UK ONLY

The Dutchman signed a bumper new five-year deal back in August 2025 that ties him to Anfield until 2030, a reward for his part in a title-winning campaign where he racked up 18 goals and seven assists.

But like many of the sqaud, he did not enjoy the strongest 2025/26 season.

Coming off a campaign at Anfield, where he managed just 7 league goals and 5 assists in 36 appearances, Gakpo arrived in North America for the World Cup looking for answers and a reset.

He has largely found both on the international stage, scoring freely in the group phase and even finding the net against Morocco in the round of 32 exit.

But now as he returns for pre-season, his future will come under plenty of speculation:

Fabrizio Romano, taking to X, has reported that Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to “step up” their efforts to sign Cody Gakpo, suggesting that the North London club are now priorising his signing with “key stages” to come:

“Tottenham plan to step up their efforts to try sign Cody Gakpo as talks will enter into key stages soon. Gakpo, option in addition to Savinho who remains another top target. Deal depends on Liverpool intentions/price as Gakpo’s not on exit list.”

It follows an update Romano made on the situation on Sunday evening, so it’s fair to say the Italian journalist feels like there is legs to the story.
