Former England striker Emile Heskey has claimed Manchester United should look to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez if they want to become serious Premier League title contenders.
The ex-Liverpool and England forward believes Fernandez possesses the qualities required to transform United’s midfield and provide the control and creativity needed to compete with the league’s leading clubs. Heskey’s comments have sparked fresh discussion over the future of the Argentina international, who remains a key figure at Stamford Bridge.
Fernandez joined CHELSEA from Benfica in January 2023 in a British-record transfer deal and has since become an important part of the club’s long-term project. The World Cup winner has taken on increased responsibility in midfield, with his passing range, vision and ability to dictate play making him one of the squad’s most influential players.
Speaking about Manchester United’s recruitment plans, Heskey suggested that adding a player of Fernandez’s calibre could help close the gap on domestic rivals: ‘Midfield is an area that Manchester United can definitely improve, and Enzo Fernandez would help,’ Heskey told BoyleSports, who offer the latest Premier League odds.
‘With Casemiro leaving earlier in the summer, they need to replace that presence. He had a very good end to the season and will be missed.
‘I think Enzo Fernandez could be the one to come in and replace him. And if they get him, I can see them as title challengers. They’ve always had the players, Manchester United, but the systems played by previous managers haven’t always suited them.
‘If they get the system right, there’s no reason they shouldn’t be challenging Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool for the title.’
Fernandez’s profile has naturally attracted attention from clubs across Europe, but Chelsea have shown little indication that they are willing to part ways with one of their most expensive signings. The midfielder remains under contract and is viewed as a central figure in the club’s plans moving forward.
CHELSEA have undergone significant changes in recent years, focusing on developing a younger squad capable of competing for major honours. Fernandez, alongside fellow stars such as Cole Palmer, has been identified as one of the players expected to lead that ambition.
A move to Manchester United would represent a major transfer between two of English football’s biggest clubs, although there are currently no reports of a formal approach from Old Trafford.
