Newcastle United have reportedly rejected Arsenal’s opening official bid for club captain Bruno Guimaraes, according to journalist Mark Douglas.
The Gunners have opened direct talks with Newcastle as they look to complete one of the biggest Premier League transfers of the summer.

Douglas reports that Arsenal’s first formal offer was turned down after failing to meet Newcastle’s valuation of the Brazil international. However, discussions have continued, with several outlets reporting that the two clubs are now closing in on an agreement.
Guimaraes has emerged as Arsenal’s priority midfield target following another impressive campaign for Newcastle and his performances for Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his midfield options before the start of the new Premier League season, and the 28-year-old has been identified as the club’s preferred addition.
Last week, L’Equipe reported that Newcastle have agreed a deal worth €90 million, excluding bonuses with the Premier League champions for the midfielder.
Arsenal initially made contact through intermediaries before progressing to direct negotiations with Newcastle, with the discussions now entering an advanced stage despite the rejection of the opening bid.
While Newcastle have resisted Arsenal’s first approach, reports suggest both clubs remain optimistic that a compromise can be reached.
The proposed package, reported to be worth around £77 million, would make Guimaraes one of Arsenal’s most expensive signings and one of Newcastle’s biggest sales, but the Magpies are demanding in excess of £80 million according to The i Paper.
The transfer discussions come during a period of significant change at St James’ Park. Newcastle recently appointed Matthias Jaissle as head coach following Eddie Howe’s departure, and retaining key players had initially been viewed as an important part of the club’s plans for the 2026/27 season.
Bruno Guimaraes is expected to return to Newcastle’s squad after a delayed arrival from Brazil, although uncertainty over his future continues to dominate the headlines.
The midfielder has developed into one of the Premier League’s leading central midfielders since joining Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 and was later appointed club captain.
The Brazilian has played a central role in Newcastle’s recent success, helping the club establish itself among the Premier League’s leading sides and competing regularly in European football.
