Newcastle United have “sounded out” the representatives of Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt, according to reports in the Portuguese media.
The Magpies are seeking a replacement for captain Bruno Guimaraes, who looks set to join Arsenal, and O Jogo claim that the Denmark international is high on their list of candidates.
It is not the first time they have been linked with Froholdt. Danish publication Bold named the North East club, along with Liverpool and Arsenal, as potential suitors back in May.
However, it appears that sporting director Ross Wilson has stepped up interest by contacting the 20-year-old’s agents in recent days.
Porto will not sell Froholdt on the cheap
The Portuguese champions are well aware that Newcastle will have money burning in their pocket if they sell Guimaraes.
O Jogo claim that the Magpies could receive €90m (£77m) from the Brazilian’s departure, and Porto will, therefore, demand a similar figure for Froholdt.
The Dane is said to have an €85m (£73m) release clause in his contract, and that is the price that Wilson will have to pay to get him out of Portugal.
Newcastle United have looked at cheaper alternatives
Last month, it was reported in the Brazilian press that Matthias Jaissle’s team were keen on former Nottingham Forest midfielder Danilo Santos.
The 25-year-old is currently plying his trade at Botafogo, but he is said to be looking to return to European football, with his asking price set at around €30m (£26m) to €40m (£34m).
There are doubts about this transfer link, mainly because it seems Danilo has been offered to other teams (including Manchester United), and the interest from the Magpies may not be as concrete as has been suggested.
Froholdt, on the other hand, appears to be very much on Wilson’s radar, so we shall have to wait and see how this story develops.
