Chelsea officially announce signing of eight-time trophy winner

Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Jordan Henderson, with the former Liverpool captain putting pen to paper on a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The 36-year-old becomes the latest addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Henderson arrives after spending last season with Brentford, having previously played for Sunderland, Liverpool, Al-Ettifaq and Ajax.

ReadChelsea reported on 27 July that Chelsea were working to sign Henderson after emerging as the leading contenders for his signature. Brentford were prepared to allow the England international to leave despite having another year remaining on his contract.

Chelsea have now officially announced Henderson’s arrival and confirmed his two-year contract.

The midfielder explained that the opportunity to join Chelsea was too significant to reject, citing the size of the club, Alonso and the quality already within the squad.

Henderson said it was “a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down” and stressed his desire to help those around him both on and off the pitch.

The experienced midfielder brings an extensive winning pedigree to Stamford Bridge. He captained Liverpool to the Premier League and Champions League, while also lifting the FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup during his time at Anfield.

Henderson has also won 91 England caps and was part of the Three Lions squad which finished third at this summer’s World Cup.

His arrival represents another clear shift in Chelsea’s recruitment under Alonso. The club have previously focused heavily on younger players, but Henderson offers leadership and Premier League experience to one of the youngest squads in the division.

Chelsea will now integrate Henderson into Alonso’s group as preparations continue for the new Premier League campaign.
