When Liverpool sold Luis Diaz, it only came about because Bayern Munich offered a fee that was just too good to reject, and the same now applies to Cody Gakpo.
Last summer, Liverpool and Bayern agreed a deal worth £65.6m after add-ons before Diaz moved to the Bundesliga.
In all competitions, the Colombian scored 26 goals and provided 23 assists, including 11 G/A in the Champions League. Personally, I think Liverpool made a massive mistake letting Diaz leave.
However, my personal feelings aside, it would appear that the Reds are now in the same boat with Gakpo, in terms of their transfer stance, and will only let him leave if the money offered is too good to turn down.
Spurs are very heavily linked with a move to sign the Dutchman, but given they need him, Liverpool must not let him go unless Tottenham offer a sum that will change the club’s situation this summer.
What is the media noise surrounding Cody Gakpo and Spurs?
Over the last 24 hours, there has been a lot of noise surrounding Gakpo’s future, from rumours to speculation.
Here are the latest claims:
“Tottenham plan to step up their efforts to try sign Cody Gakpo as talks will enter into key stages soon.” (Fabrizio Romano)
“My understanding is that Liverpool don’t plan to sell Gakpo, even if they were to recruit Bradley Barcola.” (Alex Crook for talkSPORT)
Liverpool have “no plans” to sell Gakpo despite Spurs “making their interest known”. It was added, however, that a “huge sum” could change Liverpool’s thinking (Simon Jones for the Daily Mail)
Remember Luis Diaz wasn’t for sale either.
It’s a definite possibility Cody Gakpo could leave Liverpool this summer.
How much would Liverpool be wise to accept for Gakpo?
Given that last season was Gakpo’s first poor season in terms of goals and assists, and his £250,000-a-week contract expiring only in 2030, Liverpool have plenty of negotiating power should Spurs make a serious approach for his services.
Personally, I think the same £65m price tag should apply to Gakpo as it did to Diaz last summer. The Colombian might be the better player, but Gakpo is younger and has a bigger contract with more years left on it than Diaz did before he moved to Bayern Munich.
