‘Miracle of Istanbul’ legend Vladimir Smicer has backed Liverpool to make a move for Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.
Emile Heskey has already recommended that the Merseysiders sign the midfielder from Andoni Iraola’s former team, and echoing his ex-Reds teammate’s remarks, Smicer said:
“Scott can be a great asset because he’s only 22 and is playing regularly for the England youth teams. He’s a good prospect and Premier League proven. These things are important.”
“I don’t know if he would love to play for Liverpool, but not many players would turn them down. He’s got a good chance now because Andoni Iraola is the new manager. If he likes him, I think we can find the money.”
Scott’s asking price is pretty high
Chelsea have already had one bid (reportedly worth £64m) rejected by Bournemouth for the 22-year-old, while Arsenal have also had an enquiry knocked back.
The Cherries are said to be keen on tying down Scott to a new contract, but the player has so far resisted putting pen to paper on an extension.
With the England Under-21 international in the final two years of his current deal, there is a chance of a sale being sanctioned. However, it is believed Scott may end up costing £80m.
Liverpool might only sign a midfielder if Jones leaves
While many, including Smicer, believe that sporting director Richard Hughes should be looking to reinforce the middle of the park, it is not top of his agenda. The main focus is on the front three, with negotiations underway to buy Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola.
There will likely be more urgency if Curtis Jones’s departure is approved over the coming days/weeks. Serie A champions Inter Milan remain keen on the 25-year-old, but they have yet to match the Reds’ €40m (£34m) asking price.
