The build-up to the 2026/27 Premier League season is well underway for Xabi Alonso and Chelsea as they step up their pre-season preparations. The Blues are next in action on Wednesday as they take on Italian giants Juventus in Hong Kong (12.30pm kick-off).
The game comes after Chelsea kicked off their pre-season in Australia. They came out as 6-4 winners over Western Sydney Warriors, before falling to a 2-1 defeat vs Tottenham on Saturday.
Pre-season will be a chance for new manager Alonso to take a closer look at his players as he nails down his starting XI for the season opener against Fulham in just under three weeks. It also gives new signings a chance to bed in with the team.
One of the most important things is that the squad get through it without picking up any significant injuries, which could impact the start of the season. With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest from the treatment room at Cobham.
Jordan Henderson
Injury: Wrist fracture
The midfielder suffered the injury in unusal fashion when jumping over the advertising boards during the celebrations of England’s World Cup win over Mexico. He underwent surgery over in America and remained with the squad for the remainder of the tournament.
The new signing won’t be part of the Chelsea squad for the pre-season friendly against Juventus as he is allowed three weeks off after his participation in the World Cup.
In a positive sign, Henderson wasn’t spotted wearing a cast on his wrist in his official Chelsea signing pictures.
Return date: Later in August.
Geovany Quenda
Injury: knock
The winger missed the pre-season trip to Sydney last month after picking up a knock in a behind-closed-doors friendly in the build-up to the trip. He instead remained at Cobham to recover.
In good news, he is expected to be available for the game against Juventus as he look to impress Xabi Alonso following his arrival from Sporting CP.

Robert Sanchez
Injury: Knock
The goalkeeper missed last week’s friendly vs Spurs due to a minor knock, but Alonso has given a positive update. Robert has a minor [injury], not a big thing, but not for today, and we'll have to wait until, let's see, for the next week," he said.
“We need to go assessing almost day by day, but there was no point of taking risks today."
