BBC Sport predicts major role for Arsenal’s record-breaking 16-year-old

Max Dowman is set for increased first-team involvement at Arsenal this season after strengthening his case during pre-season.

BBC Sport believes the 16-year-old can become a legitimate option for Mikel Arteta both on the wing and as a number 10.

Dowman already made history last season when he became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. He scored against Everton aged just 16 years and 73 days before earning his first league start on the final day of the campaign.

The teenager has carried that momentum into the summer. ReadArsenal highlighted Dowman among the academy players strengthening their first-team claims during pre-season, and he has since impressed again against Girona.

BBC Sport reporter Alex Howell believes Dowman is now ready to become more involved with Arteta’s senior squad.

Dowman made six Premier League appearances last season and was gradually introduced to senior football. His latest performance against Girona provided another reminder of his quality, with the youngster scoring during Arsenal’s pre-season victory in Spain.

BBC Sport expects Arteta to continue managing his development carefully. However, Dowman is now viewed as a genuine option in attacking midfield and on the flank rather than simply an academy player gaining experience.

Competition for those positions remains significant. Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Ethan Nwaneri and Arsenal’s other senior attackers will all compete for minutes once the competitive season begins.

Dowman does not need to become an automatic starter to enjoy a breakthrough campaign. Regular appearances from the bench, combined with opportunities across several competitions, could provide the next stage of his development.

After already breaking Premier League records, the challenge now is becoming a consistent member of Arteta’s first-team plans.
