The Athletic has provided further clarification on Tottenham’s reported interest in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo
Tottenham Hotspur’s search for attacking reinforcements has brought Cody Gakpo back into the spotlight, with the Liverpool forward emerging as one of the names under consideration during the final weeks of the summer transfer window.
Reports linking the Netherlands international with a move to north London have gathered pace in recent days as Spurs continue to assess options for their frontline.

Liverpool, however, have shown little public indication that they are preparing to part with one of their senior attackers.
Gakpo remains under contract at Anfield until 2030, and the club’s approach to the remainder of the transfer window is expected to be shaped by both squad depth and the demands of new head coach Andoni Iraola as he prepares for his first competitive campaign in charge.
While speculation has continued outside the club, the latest update suggests there is still a significant gap between reported interest and any genuine transfer process.
Tottenham’s admiration for the player has not yet translated into direct negotiations with Liverpool, leaving the situation at an early stage.
According to The Athletic’s latest Transfer DealSheet, Tottenham have registered their interest with Gakpo’s representatives but have yet to make contact with Liverpool or begin formal negotiations over a potential transfer.
“Tottenham have also registered their interest with Cody Gakpo’s representatives, but have yet to make contact with Liverpool or begin a formal negotiation,” the report reads.
That means no club-to-club discussions have started despite the growing attention surrounding the Dutch international.
The report adds that Liverpool have no intention of selling Gakpo this summer.
Any valuation would be considered in the context of the current transfer market, particularly after the high-profile Premier League deals involving Elliot Anderson’s move to Manchester City and Morgan Rogers’ transfer to Chelsea, which have helped redefine prices for established attacking players.
Liverpool are also reluctant to weaken their attacking options. The club are focused on strengthening the forward line rather than reducing it, while Iraola has not yet had the opportunity to work with Gakpo since taking charge at Anfield.
Those factors currently strengthen Liverpool’s position as they prepare for the new season.
At the moment, Liverpool would only consider a sale if presented with an exceptional financial offer, but the latest information from The Athletic indicates that discussions have not progressed anywhere near that stage.
Without formal contact between the clubs, any potential move remains firmly in the background.
Cody Gakpo remains an important member of Liverpool’s squad heading into the 2026-27 campaign. His versatility allows him to play across the front line.
For now, Tottenham’s interest is just that – interest.
