Liverpool are expecting one of their first-team goalkeepers to sign a new contract before sanctioning a loan move
Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States gave Andoni Iraola his first extended opportunity to work with the players available to him ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
With several senior internationals returning later following the World Cup, the tour also offered a valuable platform for a number of academy prospects to train and play alongside established first-team players.

The Reds travelled to the United States with an initial 31-man squad, taking in friendlies against Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds United as Iraola began implementing his ideas.
Young players featured prominently throughout the trip, with several taking advantage of increased opportunities created by the absence of senior internationals.
As Liverpool now turn their attention to the remainder of pre-season and the new Premier League campaign, attention is shifting from performances on tour to decisions over the futures of those emerging talents.
While some members of the travelling squad appear set for temporary moves away from Anfield, one academy goalkeeper looks increasingly likely to remain part of Iraola’s plans.
According to The Athletic, many of the younger Liverpool players who travelled on the club’s pre-season tour are expected to leave on loan before the summer transfer window closes.
The temporary moves are intended to provide regular senior football after several academy players impressed during the United States trip.
The report identifies goalkeeper Harvey Davies as a notable exception.
Rather than heading out on loan, Davies is expected to remain at Liverpool until at least the January transfer window to provide goalkeeping cover for the first team.
The Athletic also reports that Liverpool expect Davies to sign a contract extension before continuing in that role.
The situation could be revisted in winter with the expectation that the ‘keeper could be loaned out then.
Keeping the academy graduate at the club would ensure Iraola has depth in the goalkeeping department during the opening months of the season.
Davies was included in Liverpool’s initial 31-player squad for the United States tour and travelled alongside senior goalkeepers Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman and Vitezslav Jaros.
The 22-year-old has spent several years around Liverpool’s first-team setup and has been named in 18 matchday squads without making his senior debut. His first inclusion came in March 2021, when he was an unused substitute for the UEFA Champions League tie against RB Leipzig.
Davies was also on the bench as Liverpool defeated Manchester City 3-1 to win the 2022 FA Community Shield. He later gained valuable senior experience during loan spells with Crewe Alexandra and Crawley Town.
He made 32 appearances in all competitions for Crewe during the 2023-24 season before joining League Two side Crawley Town for the first half of the 2025-26 campaign, where he featured 19 times across all competitions.
