David Ornstein confirms Arsenal closing in on huge Newcastle deal

Arsenal are closing in on an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Bruno Guimaraes, with the midfielder now waiting for permission to undergo a medical.

David Ornstein reports that talks have advanced significantly and all parties want to bring the deal to a conclusion.

Guimaraes told Newcastle earlier this summer that he wanted to join Arsenal. The Gunners initially indicated they were prepared to pay around £60million, although Newcastle rejected an earlier verbal proposal below that figure.

Negotiations have continued since then, and the two clubs are now nearing a total agreement.

The Athletic reports that Arsenal and Newcastle are approaching a full agreement for Guimaraes.

The 28-year-old is currently with Newcastle at their pre-season training camp in La Manga. He is waiting for permission to undergo a medical before completing a move to north London.

The latest development follows reports over the weekend that suggested negotiations had already reached an advanced stage. ReadArsenal reported on 3 August that Bruno Andrade claimed an £80million package was “completely done”.

Ornstein has now provided the clearest indication yet that Arsenal are genuinely approaching an agreement.

Guimaraes would give Mikel Arteta another proven Premier League midfielder. He scored nine goals and provided eight assists in all competitions last season before starting all five of Brazil’s matches at the 2026 World Cup.

Arsenal have already strengthened their midfield this summer, but Guimaraes would add more physicality, creativity and Premier League experience. He could compete alongside Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi as Arteta continues reshaping his options.

Newcastle had previously insisted they did not want to sell their captain. Guimaraes’ desire to join Arsenal has changed the situation, and he could now be one step away from receiving permission to complete his medical.
