Tottenham plan to step up interest in 27yo Liverpool forward, ‘deal depends on ‘LFC’s…

Tottenham are set to up the ante in the pursuit of Premier League star.

Tottenham Hotspur are on the lookout for attacking reinforcements in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

Dominic Solanke has not been able to score goals consistently, owing to injury problems. Richarlison was the club’s top scorer last season with 12 goals, but he is into the final year of his contract, and there are talks of him being moved on this summer. So, Spurs need someone who can share the goalscoring burden with Solanke.

In addition, the need for a left-sided attacker remains prominent. Roberto De Zerbi’s squad still lacks a proven forward capable of immediately raising the level of the attack. The Tottenham boss needs an attacker who can start from the left, operate through the middle and bring goals to the side.

Tottenham plan to step up interest in Cody Gakpo

Tottenham are interested in signing Cody Gakpo from Liverpool. The Merseyside outfit would not be willing to let the 27-year-old depart without replacing him sufficiently. The Dutchman also has four years left on his deal and would not come cheaply.

The Reds are perhaps aware that Cody Gakpo wants to leave but are not in a position to act yet, given there has been no bid from Spurs. The Netherlands international is one of the more experienced forwards in the Liverpool squad, and new boss Andoni Iraola is reluctant to let him leave.

Now, according to reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are planning to step up their efforts to try and sign Gakpo. Talks between the clubs are expected to enter key stages, with the deal dependent on Liverpool’s intention to sell and the fee Tottenham can spend, as the player is not on the chopping block.

The Netherlands international has been Liverpool’s chief starter on the left wing in recent years, although he seemed to become a particular source of frustration for fans during the last campaign he only managed 15 combined goals and assists in 59 appearances across all competitions. Yet, that has not deterred Tottenham from showing an interest in signing him.

The North Londoners have registered interest with Gakpo’s camp. They intend to understand how keen the 27-year-old is to move to White Hart Lane this summer, without beginning any formal negotiations with Liverpool. Iraola does not want to reduce his team’s attacking strength by getting rid of players like Gakpo, having already seen Mohamed Salah depart on a free transfer. Plus, Hugo Ekitike is set to miss the start of the season because of the serious Achilles injury he suffered in April.

Keeping all the factors in mind, it will be interesting to see whether our club bosses succeed in persuading Liverpool to sell Gakpo and at what price.
