**Chelsea will not need to register Geovany Quenda or Marco Palestra in their 25-man Premier League squad next season despite both players being part of Xabi Alonso’s first-team plans.**
Alonso has overseen another significant overhaul at Stamford Bridge, with several new players arriving and further business expected before the transfer window closes.
Managing those numbers will become important when Chelsea submit their squad following the 1 September deadline.
However, [The Standard reports that Premier League registration rules mean Quenda and Palestra can both play without occupying senior squad places](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/chelsea-fc-news-premier-league-squad-b1292368.html).
Premier League clubs can register a maximum of 25 senior players, with no more than 17 who do not qualify as home-grown.
Under-21 players sit outside that limit and remain eligible to feature throughout the season.
For the 2026/27 campaign, that applies to players born on or after 1 January 2005.
Palestra was born on 3 March 2005, while Quenda was born on 30 April 2007. Both can therefore remain outside Chelsea’s senior list without their availability being affected.
That could prove particularly useful given how much Alonso’s squad has changed.
Morgan Rogers, Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson qualify as home-grown, while Emmanuel Emegha, Maxence Lacroix and Valentin Barco would require overseas places if they remain in the senior squad.
Chelsea have attempted to balance younger additions with experienced signings this summer. Having Quenda and Palestra available without using two of the 25 places at least gives Chelsea valuable additional room as those decisions are made.
