Reports on August 5 indicated the Gunners had finally agreed a deal with Newcastle United to sign the Brazilian midfielder, with a medical expected to take place in the coming days.
The Gunners' determination to play hardball over a transfer fee may have prevented Guimaraes from joining earlier in preseason, but it has enabled them to keep the cost down for one of their top targets of this window, and at a time when Premier League teams are paying exorbitant sums for midfielders.

It was widely reported on August 5, 2026 that Arsenal and Newcastle had agreed terms on the transfer of Guimaraes, with the move to be finalised later that week.

Arsenal began negotiations at a lower figure, while Newcastle were seeking a fee closer to the £100 million ($134.6 million) that they received from Tottenham Hotspur for Sandro Tonali. In the end, a compromise was reached.
The fee will make Guimaraes Arsenal's second most expensive signing in history, behind Declan Rice, who cost an initial £100m in July 2023.

There are few concrete details around Guimaraes' contract at Arsenal, and the club rarely makes the length of these deals public, but it can be assumed he will sign terms that will run for at least three years.
Should the Gunners amortise the transfer fee — spread the cost of it over the length of the contract — then this deal would work out at an expense of around £25 million ($33.6m) per year. For context, that's approximately a quarter of the sum the club earned for reaching the Champions League final last season.

Newcastle signed Guimaraes in January 2022 for a reported fee of around £40m ($53.8m based on current exchange rates). That means his sale to Arsenal represents gains of around £35m ($47m).
However, as reported by The Athletic, Lyon are entitled to 20 per cent of the profit from the midfielder's sale, which works out at around £6-7m. That leaves Newcastle with a net profit of closer to £28-29m ($37.7-39m).
This is a reasonable return for the Magpies given Guimaraes' contribution over the past four years — 381 appearances, a first domestic trophy in 70 years, and two seasons of Champions League football — plus the fact he turns 29 this year.

This may represent the best deal of this window.
Guimaraes, who turns 29 in November, may have little sell-on value or scope for significant development, but that is not why he was signed. He is being brought in to make a very good team even better, and that makes this transfer a bargain for Arsenal.
Guimaraes has four years of Premier League experience, so there is no acclimatisation required. He has developed into one of the league's most versatile players in that time, combining a combative style of play with effective passing and an eye for goal. He was the standout performer in Newcastle's midfield three and will now join a better one at Emirates Stadium, which will raise both his own level of performance and that of the wider Gunners engine room.
What's more, the Brazil international brings an extra level of leadership. He was made club captain at Newcastle in August 2024 and led the Magpies to EFL Cup glory the following season, ending a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. He also helped them qualify for the Champions League twice.
One reason Arsenal have kept the fee relatively low through negotiations is the fact there were no real rivals for his signature. Usually, that might be something of a red flag for a buying team, but in this instance, it's likely because most other sides are targeting younger players with a view to building a stronger side over the coming years and maintaining future profit value.
Arsenal, by contrast, wanted a ready-made star who could help a strong team take another step forward. In that respect, Guimaraes ticks every box. This is a brilliant piece of business.
