Liverpool’s lack of signings is starting to become a cause for concern, with one situation in Reds training highlighting the lack of depth available.
So far this summer, only Victor Munoz has arrived as a new signing from Osasuna, with a deal for Jeremy Jacquet agreed with Rennes earlier in the year.
Plenty of Liverpool fans are bemused at the lack of transfer business with the new Premier League season gradually approaching, and former defender Steve Nicol has also voiced his concerns, saying:
“The whole rumour thing – even with the rumours, we’re only talking about two players. I’m sorry; I’m completely befuddled here. I’ve no idea what’s going on. Absolutely 100% they should have more signings by now, and the longer it goes without any [more], it just tells you they’re gonna end up gambling when they shouldn’t be.”
Now, a respected source on X has claimed that Andoni Iraola’s assistant Tommy Elphick had to join in training in the USA to make sure enough people were actually involved:
“Liverpool DESPERATELY draft in Andoni Iraola’s assistant Tommy Elphick during their US pre-season tour training… JUST TO MAKE UP THE NUMBERS!!! Absolute MADNESS!!”
Liverpool are threatening to get themselves in a mess
It should be stressed that the above claim feels hyperbolic, given that plenty of key Liverpool players haven’t yet fully returned to pre-season training.
That said, the lack of transfers feels unacceptable at this point, unless the recruitment team are planning a burst of additions this month, including Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola.
Having sporting director Richard Hughes overseeing things when he is off to Saudi Arabia soon doesn’t feel ideal, and this feels like a pivotal few weeks for Liverpool.
If they don’t act and sign top players, they will be at risk of being left behind by some of their Premier League rivals, whereas they could challenge for major honours by making the right additions.
Realistically, a centre-back, right-back, central midfielder and at least one winger are needed, while another striker to support Alexander Isak in the absence of Hugo Ekitike could also be ideal.
Fingers crossed Liverpool get things sorted by the time the summer transfer window ends, but as things stand, they aren’t exactly exuding confidence.
