Bruno Guimaraes is set to discover whether his Newcastle United legacy remains intact on November 21.
A long-winded transfer saga is set to conclude after the Magpies and Arsenal reached an agreement over a £75million transfer. The Brazilian - set to leave the club’s pre-season camp today - angled for a St James’ Park exit since the World Cup.
Guimaraes hired a “super agent” and, until now, Arsenal have been working via intermediaries to lay the foundations of a deal. An opening bid was rejected earlier this week as the midfielder travelled to Newcastle’s training camp on Monday.
Guimaraes never intended to go down the route that saw Alexander Isak desecrate his Toon legacy 12 months ago. Ultimately, he will find out soon enough whether Newcastle supporters still view him in high regard.
The Magpies are set to face Arsenal at St James’ Park on November 21. Newcastle’s boo boys would have already been vocal for Isak and Sandro Tonali in the opening two games of the season.
However, social media opinion on Guimaraes appears divided. Many appear to have turned on the Brazilian for manufacturing a move all summer.
The 28-year-old hired a “super agent” to facilitate a deal, with news emerging last month that he would likely never play for Newcastle again. Others take the opinion that Guimaraes gave everything for the black-and-white cause, guiding the club to domestic silverware for the first time in 70 years.
He has arguably been the face of the post-takeover era - adored by Newcastle fans - with two Champions League campaigns to boot. Ultimately, an Autumn clash on Tyneside between the two sides will determine Guimaraes’ lasting impression with the Newcastle fan base.
