Liverpool’s transfer business has been quite underwhelming so far, but they appear to be sparking into life at long last.
Exciting news broke late on Tuesday evening, with widespread reports claiming that in addition to talks with PSG for Bradley Barcola, the Reds are now making a move to sign thrilling talent Ibrahim Mbaye.
Fans continue to wonder what plans, if any, Liverpool have to invest in their weak defensive options, and now journalist David Lynch has provided some extra clarity on the situation.
David Lynch says signing a centre-back is not Liverpool’s priority even if they are considering their options
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Lynch reports that signing rapid, talented wingers is Liverpool’s priority even if they are also considering the available options to bolster their defence.
He said: “From the conversations I’ve had, I can’t go as hard as to say Liverpool are not going to sign a defender. The door is being left open to the possibility.
“What I would say is it’s not considered internally a priority for Liverpool right now. They want multiple forwards. If they were to sign a defender, I think it would come late in the window. I wouldn’t get your hopes up if you think Liverpool get two defenders.
“That to me, from my understanding, seems very, very unlikely. The likeliest thing that happens is if a defender is to come in, someone who is a versatile defender.”

Signing a centre-back is important but who Liverpool pick is even more crucial
Liverpool don’t need any old centre-back this summer; they need a player that suits Andoni Iraola’s style of play. This isn’t a groundbreaking claim by any means, but it’s crucial that they get this piece of business spot on.
Illia Zabarnyi would be my pick. Reports this week claim that the Reds are in talks with his agents, who also represent Curtis Jones.
Not only is the 23-year-old very well-acquainted with Iraola’s demands for a centre-back, but he became one of the very best in his position in the Premier League under the Spanish head coach’s guidance.
With Virgil van Dijk now 35, the time is approaching when Liverpool will need to strike out without him, and Zabarnyi would be a fantastic signing to have long before he does leave.
