Victor Munoz arrives for first day as Liverpool player after cutting holiday short

Victor Munoz reported for pre-season at the AXA Training Centre on Wednesday after cutting his holiday short to meet and train with his new teammates.

The World Cup winner remains Liverpool’s most recent signing, announced in mid-June in a deal worth £34.5 million.

The 23-year-old arrives as a left winger capable of functioning across the attack, and is expected to be just one of a few reinforcements up top for Andoni Iraola.

He reported to the AXA Training Centre on Wednesday morning, joining the rest of the first-team squad on their first day back at the AXA since their US tour concluded on Sunday.

Munoz was filmed at the training ground by the club’s cameras, greeting Giovanni Leoni and countryman Stefan Bajcetic, ahead of undergoing fitness tests.

The Spaniard has not played competitively since mid-May after failing to be handed minutes at the World Cup following a struggle with injuries.

While FIFA rules dictate players must be given at least three weeks off after the tournament, he ended his break half a week early to settle into his new surroundings.

“He wanted also to come a little bit earlier than the three weeks that they have the right to have, because obviously he is coming to a new club, he will need some time to adapt, to meet his teammates,” Iraola explained last week.

With Alisson reporting back for training on Tuesday and Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo joining up with the squad, it leaves only Alexis Mac Allister to come back from his summer break.

The Argentine played the third-most minutes of any outfielder this summer (749) and is only expected to report for training from August 10 onwards.

With Liverpool’s squad thin on depth, Munoz’s early return gives him and his teammates the opportunity to build rapport before the season gets underway in just over two weeks.

Iraola is still imprinting his style on his squad and Munoz arrives at a time when Van Dijk, Gakpo and Alisson are also going through the transition from the old head coach to the new one.

If Munoz can prove his fitness, he will put himself in firm contention to start at St James’ Park with senior options currently limited up top as pursuits for PSG’s Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mabye continue.
