Sheffield Wednesday have opened talks with former Everton and Stockport County midfielder Tyler Onyango, according to The Wednesday Word.
Sheffield Wednesday are working on a permanent deal for former Everton man Tyler Onyango, following his trial with the League One side this summer.
The Wednesday Word reports that the Owls have entered talks with the 23-year-old. Onyango is a player familiar to Sheffield Wednesday.
Not only has the midfielder been working with the club in recent weeks, but SWFC sporting director Simon Wilson oversaw the loan signing of the player twice at Stockport County.
Onyango would be available on a free transfer following his release by Everton this summer. The player has 36 League One appearances to his name.
A product of the Everton academy, Onyango has only ever made five appearances for the Toffees first team. Those did include Premier League outings against Manchester City, Chelsea and Aston Villa.
While at Goodison Park, Onyango was awarded the Keith Tamlin Award, an academy honour which recognises talent, previously won by Ross Barkley.
The midfielder also represented England at Under-17 level but his career has faltered due to injuries. Onyango has missed at least 15 matches in each of the last four seasons.
The player has spent the past two seasons on loan at Stockport County. When fit, his versatility has allowed him to play both on the right flank and at centre-back.
A hamstring injury ended Onyango’s season in February but the player has worked his way back to fitness ahead of the 2026/27 campaign and is on the lookout for a new club.
Onyango came on at half-time in the 4-0 defeat to Oldham Athletic last week end. SWFC head coach Henrik Pedersen said: “He can play right centre-back in the back three. He can play as a number six. He can play more positions. He’s training right now with us, and then let’s see what’s happening.”
While it’s perhaps not a transfer move for Sheffield Wednesday fans to feel huge excitement about, the Owls’ midfield is a key area for recruitment.
Only Barry Bannan, Billy Mitchell and Jarvis Thornton are naturally central players. Sean Fusire and Liam Palmer can play there, but more strength in depth for a gruelling League One season can only be a good thing.
Onyango wasn’t used centrally by Stockport County last season, but has spent the majority of his career in that role. His experience coming through a Premier League side could be valuable and there’s reassurance with Wilson knowing the player well.
SWFC must be cautious with the player’s injuries. A free transfer is tempting given the budget restrictions, but paying a player to spend half the campaign on the treatment table is not so attractive.
That’s for the club’s medical team to weigh up but, if Onyango is fighting fit again, it could be a welcome addition for Sheffield Wednesday.
