Cody Gakpo open to leaving Liverpool

Cody Gakpo has remained at the centre of transfer speculation throughout the summer, with Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs credited with an interest in the Liverpool forward.

The Netherlands international remains under contract at Anfield, but reports have continued to link him with a move away before the transfer window closes.

Liverpool’s position has consistently been that Gakpo is not actively for sale. The Reds view the 27-year-old as an important member of Andoni Iraola’s squad, particularly as the club continues to reshape its attacking options following Mohamed Salah’s departure.

Despite that stance, fresh claims from the Netherlands suggest the situation may not be entirely straightforward.

Liverpool are said to be open to a sale of Gakpo depending on Tottenham’s offer.

Now a new report has also highlighted how a potential transfer could have financial implications beyond Liverpool and Tottenham.

According to Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink on X, Gakpo was open to joining Tottenham earlier this summer, although Liverpool have not been willing to cooperate with a transfer “at the moment”. Elfrink added that the situation remains ongoing.

The report does not suggest that an agreement is close, but indicates that the player’s reported willingness to consider the move has not been matched by Liverpool’s current position.

Elfrink also pointed out that PSV Eindhoven are closely following developments because they stand to benefit financially if Gakpo is sold.

The Dutch club would be entitled to a solidarity payment, with FIFA’s solidarity mechanism applying to domestic transfers as well as international moves.

In this case, up to five per cent of the total transfer fee would be distributed among the clubs involved in Gakpo’s development, meaning PSV could receive a significant payment if Liverpool eventually sell him.

Tottenham’s interest in Gakpo has been widely reported in recent weeks as Roberto De Zerbi looks to strengthen his attacking options before the new Premier League season. Spurs have continued to assess a number of wide players, with Gakpo among the names linked with the club.

Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and remains under contract until 2030. Since arriving at Anfield, he has made 180 appearances for the club, scoring 50 goals while helping Liverpool win the Premier League title in 2025.

For now, Liverpool’s asking price is the biggest obstacle to any potential transfer.
