Liverpool offered opportunity to sign Real Madrid centre-back

According to Graeme Bailey on [TEAMTALK](https://www.teamtalk.com/liverpool/raul-ascencio-transfer-news-liverpool-in-contact-real-madrid-sale-iraola-mourinho) Liverpool have been offered the opportunity to sign young Real Madrid centre-back Raul Asencio.

The deal takes a strange turn as the defender would come into Liverpool as an Ibrahima Konate replacement, who signing with Real Madrid, allows for Asencio to be sold.

The deal could open up for Liverpool at the perfect time as their squad depth at centre-back has come under question. No senior centre-backs played any minutes in the final two games of the US tour as Virgil van Dijk did not travel and Jeremy Jacquet wasn’t fit enough to be risked. Joe Gomez lasted seven minutes before picking up an injury that will see him miss the start of the season.

Asencio: Building for the future

According to the report, Iraola is a fan of Asencio and the young defender would be a step towards the future. At 23, he could form a long term partnership with Jeremy Jacquet. Virgil van Dijk is entering the final year of his contract again and it is hard to know whether the club caption will renew or finish his career elsewhere.

Liverpool will also need to build depth in the squad with the challenges that they have at centre-back currently.

Asencio played 34 games for Real Madrid last season, including 23 in La Liga and eight in the Champions League.
