Real Madrid have made an improved contract offer to Vinicius Junior during a meeting in the Spanish capital today, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.
The Brazil international is presently contracted to Los Blancos until June next year. His situation has partly contributed to Arsenal exploring an ambitious move for him.
Ornstein now reveals that Vinicius’ representatives held talks with Madrid general director Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat regarding a contract renewal earlier today.
Vinicius has been holding out for an annual salary of £25.7 million, including a base salary, performance add-ons and a renewal bonus; the latter element has proved a sticking point in negotiations.
Madrid were previously reluctant to meet the winger’s financial demands, but have now raised their offer to a level that reflects the importance of Vinicius to the club as well as the ongoing project.
The decision is now left to Vinicius. He needs to decide whether to renew, explore free agency next summer or pursue the opportunity at Arsenal. Madrid want to avoid losing him as a free agent.
