Geovany Quenda needed only one Chelsea start to offer Xabi Alonso another intriguing option on the right wing.
The 19-year-old was one of the brighter performers in Wednesday’s defeat against Juventus, while Manchester City have simultaneously opened talks with Pedro Neto’s representatives over a potential transfer.
Chelsea do not need to sell Neto. However, Quenda’s emergence could make a substantial offer for the Portugal international considerably easier to consider.
Geovany Quenda offers Chelsea something different
Quenda arrived at Chelsea with significant expectations after agreeing an initial move from Sporting Lisbon more than a year ago.
Chelsea eventually paid up to around £44million for the winger, who stayed in Portugal for another season before joining Alonso’s squad this summer. BBC Sport previously highlighted his ability to beat defenders one against one and operate on either flank.
Those qualities were visible against Juventus.
ReadChelsea’s player ratings highlighted Quenda as one of Chelsea’s brightest performers after he combined naturally with Marco Palestra and repeatedly tried to attack his defender.
Chelsea’s official profile also underlines Quenda’s versatility. He played in both attacking wide positions and at wing-back for Sporting before signing a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2034.
That matters for Alonso.
Neto remains the more established Premier League player, but Chelsea now have Quenda, Estevao, Jamie Gittens and others competing for wide roles.
Pedro Neto interest gives Chelsea a decision
Manchester City have already made direct contact with Neto’s representatives.
Fabrizio Romano reports that City are considering the 26-year-old if Savinho leaves, although any transfer would depend on Chelsea’s valuation. Chelsea are currently looking to keep Neto and he remains part of Alonso’s plans.
That should remain their position unless a significant offer arrives.
Neto provides proven Premier League quality, carries the ball at speed and gives Chelsea experience within an increasingly young attacking group. Selling him simply because Quenda impressed in one friendly would make little sense.
The calculation changes if City approach the figures being reported around Neto.
Chelsea signed him from Wolves for around £54m in 2024, while recent reports have valued him at approximately £70m. A substantial profit on a player approaching 27 would at least deserve consideration when Alonso already possesses several younger alternatives.
ReadChelsea’s Juventus analysis also highlighted how Quenda and Chelsea’s other young players are genuinely pushing for first-team roles rather than simply filling pre-season minutes.
Quenda still has plenty to prove. One promising afternoon does not make him an automatic Premier League starter.
It does, though, leave Chelsea in a stronger position.
If City eventually make an offer Alonso and Chelsea cannot ignore, Quenda’s early impact suggests they may already possess part of the solution.
