The 49ers have been relatively effective this summer when it comes to offloading the Leeds United players who needed to be moved on. They have also managed to keep hold of our better players.
The only exception to this rule would be Pascal Struijk, who joined Brighton. However, it wasn’t long until the Dutchman was replaced by Tarik Muharemovic.
The 49ers still have work to do when it comes to selling some out-of-favour players like Largie Ramazani and Joe Gelhardt.
However, a player who Leeds should ideally want to keep hold of is said to be subject of interest from elsewhere.
Sebastiaan Bornauw wanted by Hamburg
The Whites ended their pre-season tour in the US on a high, thumping Liverpool 4-2.
In that game, Sebastiaan Bornauw was among those who impressed. The 27-year-old replaced Gabriel Gudmundsson, who went down injured early in the game. Bornauw even got himself an assist after flicking a long throw onto the backpost for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to fire in from close range.
Bornauw has never been the first name on the team sheet since arriving from Wolfsburg last summer for £5.1million. Despite this, the Belgian has proven to be a very useful squad player.
According to reports from Abendblatt, Bornauw is one of three or four centre-backs Hamburg are seriously considering making a move for.
Of the players on this shortlist, Bornauw is described as “the desired top solution” for the centre of their defence. The report also claims the defender is eager to get regular playing time again. This looks like it will be hard to come by at Leeds.
Leeds should try to keep Sebastiaan Bornauw
If Bornauw’s head is turned at the prospect of returning to the Bundesliga and playing regularly, you couldn’t really blame him.
But if we can keep hold of the defender, I certainly would. That is, unless a ridiculous offer comes in that we can’t refuse.
At this point in the window, we need to be focusing on other areas of our squad. For example, signing another striker, winger, and backup left-back are all moves I’d be looking to make.
If Bornauw leaves, our focus would have to be shifted towards bringing in another backup centre-back. It would just be an unnecessary extra piece of stress added to the window.
He proved he is capable of coming into the team and putting a shift in. Even when he has spent a long time on the bench.
So unless the money is great, or Bornauw forces a move out, I’d be looking to keep hold of him.
