Enzo Fernandez still faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge, and the Chelsea sporting leadership team need to find a resolution before it's too late.

The Chelsea sporting leadership team needs to resolve the future of Enzo Fernandez before the opening weekend of the new Premier League season. Although Real Madrid has withdrawn from the one-horse race to sign the 25-year-old midfielder, he still faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.
football.london understands that, at the end of May, Fernandez informed higher-ups at Stamford Bridge of his desire to leave. So, the Blues gave the Argentina international, whom they signed from Benfica for £106million in February 2023, a £120m price tag.
Then, at the start of July, Los Blancos released a statement firmly denying they have made any effort to sign Fernandez, either directly or through intermediaries. Real Madrid also claimed, despite their 'utmost respect' for him as a player, they have 'no intention of undertaking such an operation'.
The Spanish giants later claimed they have an 'excellent relationship' with Chelsea, having swiftly wrapped up a deal for Marc Cucurella at the start of the World Cup. Fernandez, who has six years left on his contract with the Blues, has never publicly declared his intention to leave, leaving his agent, Javier Pastore, to fan the flames.
Unless Florentino Perez or Jose Mourinho have a change of heart and suddenly re-enter the market for a midfielder, the Argentine doesn't actually appear to have any suitors. Yet, he still faces an uncertain future in West London, and there needs to be a resolution in the next two weeks or so.
Although the transfer window doesn't shut until 11pm on Tuesday, September 1, the sporting leadership team must finalise the bulk of business before Chelsea face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday, August 24. By the opening game of the new Premier League season, Alonso needs to have established the core of his squad.
If Fernandez changed his agent, pleaded for forgiveness, earned back the trust of his teammates and new manager, and perhaps signed a new contract to prove his loyalty, he would undoubtedly restore his status as a key player in the side.

Equally, if he were to dig his heels in and not do any of the above, the Blues manager would be left with an unhappy player who could disrupt the dressing room. Alonso shouldn't be expected to face, let alone solve, a problem that he didn't create.
This summer, the sporting leadership team have turned over a new leaf, and it would be a shame if they put their hard work to waste by suddenly putting the former Liverpool midfielder in an awkward position. Alonso shouldn't have to tread on eggshells until the future of Fernandez is resolved.
Interestingly, Alonso was asked last month whether he wanted to keep the Argentine. After replying, 'yes', the Chelsea manager added: "We have spoken. But, as you can understand, what we said will remain private."
Then, speaking to reporters at the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong on Tuesday ahead of a pre-season friendly against Juventus, Moises Caicedo claimed it would be 'massive' if the Blues could keep Fernandez. The Blues midfielder said: "I love Enzo.
"He knows I have a lot of respect for him because, as we know, the player he is. Not just the player, he is a great person. I want him to stay, but I am not going to talk about that. If he stays here, it's going to be massive for us."
