Everton have completed the signing of Christian Nørgaard from Arsenal, with the Danish international becoming David Moyes‘ fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Merlin Röhl, Tyrique George and Hayden Hackney.
The 32-year-old midfielder joins for a reported £7million after Arsenal agreed to sell him just twelve months after he made the switch from Brentford. He has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Hill Dickinson Stadium, running through to the summer of 2028.
From Emirates bit-part to Everton project
It’s been a whirlwind eighteen months for Nørgaard. He left Brentford last summer as their captain, having made close to 200 appearances across six seasons and having been instrumental in establishing the Bees as a genuine Premier League fixture following promotion in 2021. Arsenal came calling with an initial fee in the region of £10million, and Mikel Arteta talked him up as a player with “proven leadership skills and a strong character” who would add depth and balance in midfield.
In practice, that depth was rarely called upon. Nørgaard made just seven league starts across a season in which Arsenal won the Premier League title and reached the finals of both the Champions League and Carabao Cup. He’ll leave north London with a winner’s medal, but with barely 101 minutes of top-flight football to show for a campaign that, by his own admission, didn’t offer him what he wanted.
That’s where Everton come in. Speaking after the move was confirmed, Nørgaard explained that he wanted a fresh challenge and, in his words, “to play a bigger football role.”
He also touched on conversations with Arteta, who spent time at Everton as a player under Moyes, saying his former manager had only positive things to say about both the club and its manager.
What he brings
Nørgaard is a holder of 41 caps for Denmark and arrives with a track record as a defensively disciplined, high-workrate central midfielder – the kind of profile Brentford leaned on heavily during his time there, and the sort of experienced, Premier League-tested option Moyes has shown a preference for. At 32, he’s unlikely to be a marquee name to excite the neutral, but for a squad that’s been searching for control and know-how through the middle of the park, a leader with six years of Premier League mileage under his belt is a sensible, low-risk addition.
Everton’s summer business now reads: Merlin Röhl, Tyrique George, Hayden Hackney and Christian Nørgaard through the door, with further incomings still expected to reshape the squad ahead of the new campaign.
