Liverpool supporters have been excited by Andoni Iraola’s arrival, but club legend Jamie Carragher has highlighted one challenge that could define the Reds’ season.
Speaking on Football Ramble, Carragher questioned how Iraola will cope with the demands of balancing Premier League football with a European campaign for the first time in his managerial career.
Carragher said:
“He will make mistakes because he’s not managed a European campaign. How does he rotate? Does he rotate in the 12:30 game on a Saturday after an away game on the Wednesday? Does he stay with the team? Does he come straight back after a game?”
It is a fascinating point—and one that Liverpool supporters should not underestimate.
A Completely Different Challenge
Managing Bournemouth and managing Liverpool are two very different jobs.
At Bournemouth, Iraola had fewer competitions, a lighter fixture list and less expectation to challenge on multiple fronts.
At Liverpool, the reality is very different.
The Reds are expected to compete for:
● The Premier League
● European honours
● Domestic cups
That means playing high-intensity football every three or four days for much of the season.
Rotation Will Be Crucial
One of the biggest tests facing Iraola will be squad management.
Knowing when to rotate can often be just as important as knowing who to rotate.
Rest players too often, and results can suffer.
Don’t rotate enough, and fatigue quickly becomes a problem.
Liverpool experienced exactly that in previous seasons, with injuries and tired performances often costing valuable points.
Finding the right balance will be essential.
Learning on the Job
The good news for Liverpool supporters is that every elite manager has had to learn this lesson.
Jürgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta all adapted their squad management over time as fixture lists became increasingly demanding.
Carragher is not suggesting Iraola cannot do it.
He is simply acknowledging that this will be a new experience for him.
Mistakes may happen.
The important thing is how quickly he learns from them.
Liverpool Have Better Depth
One factor working in Iraola’s favour is the quality of Liverpool’s squad.
With players such as:
● Florian Wirtz
● Ryan Gravenberch
● Dominik Szoboszlai
● Alexander Isak
● Jeremie Frimpong
● Milos Kerkez
Liverpool possess more depth than any side Iraola has previously managed.
That should give him greater flexibility when navigating busy periods.
Supporters Need Patience
Carragher’s comments also serve as a reminder that this is a long-term project.
Supporters are understandably excited by Iraola’s attacking philosophy and energetic style.
However, adapting to the demands of managing one of Europe’s biggest clubs takes time.
European football presents logistical, tactical and physical challenges unlike anything he has previously experienced.
A Huge Season Ahead
There is little doubt that Iraola has the coaching ability to succeed.
The question is how quickly he can adapt to managing a squad expected to compete on multiple fronts.
Carragher’s observations are fair.
This season will provide answers to questions that have never been asked of Iraola before.
If he gets those decisions right, Liverpool have every chance of enjoying a hugely successful campaign.
If not, it will provide valuable lessons as he continues to grow into one of Europe’s most exciting young coaches.
