Liverpool have been “contacted” by intermediaries about a potential deal for Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio, according to reports.

TEAMtalk claim that manager Andoni Iraola is a “long-time admirer” of the 23-year-old, and that prompted representatives to reach out to the Reds regarding a transfer.

Asencio is deemed surplus to requirements by Real, and he is available, but there is still one big hurdle to overcome – the player himself.

So far, the centre-back has shown no desire to leave the Bernabeu, where he has spent the last nine years since joining from Las Palmas.

Why Asencio would be an ideal signing

The Reds currently lack depth at centre-half and right-back, which are both positions the Spaniard has played on a regular basis.

Last season, Asencio played 28 matches in the middle of the defence and 6 on the right flank for Real.

With Connor Bradley and Geovanni Leoni not fit to start the season as they continue their recoveries from their respective knee injuries, recruiting Asencio to provide cover in their absence would make a lot of sense.

Liverpool have been linked with other defenders

There are conflicting claims on whether sporting director Richard Hughes will strengthen the backline before the transfer window closes.

Some sources say there is no intention to add another defender, while others claim that it will be prioritised once deals for forward targets are wrapped up.

Asencio is not the only centre-back who is on the Merseyside club’s radar. It was reported in Italy last week that an enquiry has been made for AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Illia Zabarnyi is believed to have been offered to the Reds, while there is said to be some interest in Juventus’s Pierre Kalulu as well.

Like Asencio, the Frenchman is a centre-back/right-back hybrid, making him an attractive prospect, but it remains to be seen who Hughes will actively pursue.
