A new exhibition is to open at Anfield, paying tribute to the career of Liverpool’s greatest-ever goalscorer, Ian Rush.
For years, Rush’s relics and mementoes had sat concealed in his attic.
Three years ago, Liverpool got in touch about having a look at what he had kept over the course of his footballing life.
What they discovered was a treasure trove that is going on display at the Liverpool FC Museum from August 14.

“There’s a lot there when you think about it. When you stop playing, you forget about what you’ve achieved,” said the legendary striker.
“It was all up in bin bags in the loft, so to get it all out, get it cleaned up and share it with Liverpool Football Club.
“For me, I’ve got two grandchildren. They’ll get the chance to see me and see what I’ve achieved.”
Rush scored an astonishing 346 goals in 660 appearances for Liverpool across 15 seasons, a tally that included 16 hat-tricks.

Among the centre-pieces of the exhibition are all 16 of his signed match balls from his playing days, including the ball from when he hit four against Everton in 1982.
The 5-0 victory at Goodison Park was so joyous that it was immortalised in song at the end of Poor Scouser Tommy.
Museum curator Mark Platt said: “At one point we thought that ball had been lost, so to have that ball, it’s really a major piece.”
Another famous win over the Blues is remembered at the museum in the form of Rush’s 1986 FA Cup final match-worn shirt, from the day Liverpool beat their neighbours to win the double.
Rush recounted: “My dream as a kid was to score the winning goal in the FA Cup final. Now for kids, it’s the Champions League final, isn’t it?

“I used to watch it from nine o’clock in the morning until five o’clock at night, then go out in my backyard and pretend I was the one scoring the winning goal in that FA Cup final.
“To get the chance to do it in 1986, against Everton as well, to score two goals and we won 3-1, obviously that made my dream come true.”
Among the other highlights on display are the Welshman’s two European golden boots that he won in 1984, after scoring 47 goals as Liverpool won the European Cup, League Cup and First Division.
“I remember collecting it in Paris,” the 64-year-old recalled.

“Being the first British player ever to win that, that was pretty special.”
The artefacts don’t only hark back to his time at Liverpool; the displays also take a look at his brief spell at Juventus as well as his games for Wales and his early days as a youngster at Chester.
The exhibition, which also includes a hologram, match-worn boots, video footage and extensive memorabilia from Rush’s career, is situated in the Liverpool FC Museum at Anfield and is well worth a visit from August 14.
