From a Liverpool fan perspective, this report is encouraging because it fits the wider shape of the summer. The wing department needs freshness, unpredictability and, above all, future-proofing. Replacing lost output is one challenge, but building a new attacking cycle is the bigger one.
Mbaye sounds like the sort of move supporters can get excited about. He is young, highly rated and clearly admired by more than one top club. When teams like Liverpool and Leverkusen are both in the frame, it usually tells you the talent level is serious.
There will be understandable caution over a €40m fee for a teenager. Fans always ask the same fair question, can he help now, or is this purely for later? Ideally, Liverpool need both. They need players who can grow into stars, but they also need immediate competition in the squad.
If Leverkusen really are moving towards Diaby, that feels like a genuine opening Liverpool should exploit quickly. Elite young players rarely stay available for long once the field narrows. If the club believe Mbaye can become a top-level winger under Andoni Iraola, this is the moment to be decisive.
Supporters will not judge this deal only on potential, they will judge it on what comes next around it. But as part of a bigger attacking rebuild, it makes plenty of sense.
