We think we know why Liverpool are open to selling Cody Gapko to Tottenham
We’re going to start the article with a bit of a disclaimer that this isn’t us publishing our own information on Liverpool, but rather a calculated guess.
In recent weeks, Tottenham have been heavily linked with a move for Cody Gakpo as Roberto De Zerbi and co aim to reinforce their attack.
The Dutchman has four years left on his current deal and has largely been a reliable performer for the Reds since his move from PSV Eindhoven.
Initially, there were reports that Liverpool would not sell Gakpo regardless of the transfer fee.
But now, it appears as if their stance is softening and we think it could have something to do with Djed Spence, among other things.
Tottenham and Liverpool expected to do business this summer
Earlier today, we relayed claims on Read Liverpool that Djed Spence is open to a move to Anfield as the Reds remain on the lookout for a versatile defender.
After asking to leave, the England international has attracted a bit of interest from Inter Milan, while Liverpool’s interest has just broken on the mainstream media.
Now, you see where we’re headed, right? If Tottenham want Gakpo and Liverpool, Spence, surely there is some kind of an arrangement to be worked out there?
We’re just merely scratching the surface with the Spence mention as a few more factors could affect Liverpool’s decision to part with Gakpo.
The Reds have been locked in talks to sign Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG to bolster their attack.
If they succeed, the Reds would have Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Federico Chiesa, Rio Ngumoha, Victor Munoz and the PSG duo on top of Gakpo, which is kind of overkill.
If the Reds receive a sizable bid for the Dutchman, maybe they will be tempted to offload him.
Additionally, Iraola spoke earlier this summer about wanting all his wingers to play on both flanks. Considering all their pre-existing options and the ones they have been linked with, Gakpo is the only one who doesn’t satisfy that criterion, which could be another reason behind his potential departure.
And finally, his departure would allow free up a non-HG spot for further reinforcements, preferably in midfield or in defence.
We’re not saying Liverpool will surely sell Gakpo, nor are we claiming the Reds will make a move for Spence.
All we’re saying is don’t be surprised to see Liverpool and Tottenham do business between now and the end of the summer transfer window.
