Chelsea have two weeks to resolve £120m star’s future
Enzo Fernandez’s Chelsea future is becoming one of the most important remaining summer decisions, with Xabi Alonso needing clarity over a £120million midfielder he has publicly said he wants to keep.
A fresh Football.London report says Chelsea have around two weeks to bring some certainty to the situation before their Premier League opener at Fulham. Fernandez has attracted interest throughout the summer, but there is still no obvious club preparing to meet Chelsea’s valuation.
That leaves Chelsea in an unusual position. They are not actively trying to sell one of their best midfielders, yet they have also placed a price on him which would make a departure possible.

Enzo Fernandez future needs clarity from Chelsea
Fernandez remains contracted until 2032, so Chelsea are under little financial pressure to sell.
The club value him at around £120m, with BBC Sport previously reporting that Chelsea would consider an offer at that level after Fernandez produced 15 goals and seven assists last season.
Alonso’s position has also been unusually clear.
When asked directly whether he wanted Fernandez to stay, the Chelsea manager answered “yes”. Sky Sports reported that Alonso had already spoken privately with the Argentina international and viewed him as part of his plans.
ReadChelsea has previously examined how Manchester City and Real Madrid’s own midfield plans could leave Fernandez with fewer realistic destinations. That argument has become stronger as the window has progressed.
The question now is less about whether Chelsea can sell him and more about whether allowing uncertainty to linger helps anybody.
Alonso needs to build around Caicedo and Fernandez
There is a strong football argument for drawing a line under the situation.
Moises Caicedo and Fernandez remain Chelsea’s most established central midfield partnership. Alonso needs time to define their responsibilities, particularly with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer also capable of occupying advanced central areas.
Fernandez offers qualities Chelsea would have to spend heavily to replace. His passing range can accelerate possession from deeper positions, while his improved movement into the penalty area produced considerably more goals last season.
Selling him for £120m would create huge financial flexibility, but it would also create another major recruitment job.
Chelsea already have several senior-player decisions on their plate. ReadChelsea reported on Wednesday that Manchester City have approached Pedro Neto’s representatives, although the winger is not currently considered for sale. The Neto and Fernandez situations underline the balance Alonso must strike between protecting valuable players and reshaping the squad.
That is why resolving Fernandez’s position before Fulham matters.
Chelsea do not necessarily need a new contract signed or a public declaration. They simply need Alonso beginning the competitive season knowing whether one of his most important midfielders is fully part of the project.
If nobody comes close to £120m, the sensible outcome is increasingly obvious: close the door and build around him.
