Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has reportedly identified Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi as a priority transfer target, with fresh reports suggesting the Blues could consider a £64 million move for the Spain international before the summer transfer window closes.
Zubimendi has established himself as one of Europe’s most highly rated midfielders following several impressive seasons in La Liga. Known for his composure on the ball, tactical intelligence and ability to control the tempo of matches, the midfielder has attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs across Europe.
According to reports, Alonso sees Zubimendi as a player who could bring greater balance and experience to Chelsea’s midfield. There is little debate over Zubimendi’s quality, but CHELSEA supporters could understandably question whether spending £64m on another midfielder represents the best use of resources.

Players such as Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández arrived for huge fees, and Chelsea fans may feel the focus should now shift towards other positions that require greater attention.
The biggest concern would be whether Zubimendi is a genuine upgrade or simply another expensive addition competing for similar roles. Chelsea’s midfield already contains talented options, and adding another high-profile player could create selection issues rather than solving existing problems.
That said, Zubimendi’s qualities would undoubtedly appeal to Alonso. His ability to dictate play, protect the defence and operate under pressure fits the style many expect the manager to implement.
