Everton made a late announcement last night for the signing of midfielder Christian Nørgaard from Arsenal. The 32-year-old brings some much-needed experience and veteran nous at defensive midfield, a position the Blues don’t really have a player cut out for.
Having made his name over six seasons with Brentford, the Denmark international with 41 caps moved to Arsenal last summer where he won a Premier League title with Mikel Arteta. Having found himself on the sidelines however, he’s chosen to move to Everton where he’s signed a two-year contract.
The midfielder has chosen to wear the #23 at the Blues, formerly worn by a legend and club captain Seamus Coleman who left the club after seventeen years this summer.
Speaking after signing for the Toffees, Nørgaard expressed what it meant for him to take Coleman’s squad number -
”It’s a big honour to not only wear the Everton shirt, but to wear the number 23.
”It’s been worn by perhaps one of the biggest legends of this club, in Seamus Coleman, who I know has only recently left.
“It’s big shoes to fill, but please don’t compare. I am a different player with a different history, but I promise you I will wear it with big pride, and big honour.”
The **#**23 shirt at Everton is not one that has been worn very often, mostly since the advent of the Premier League era - Séamus Coleman (2009–2026), Lucas Neill (2009), Manuel Fernandes (2007–2008), Alessandro Pistone (2000–2007), Rodrigo (1999–2000), Jason Moore (1997–1999), Darren Tiler (1995–1997), Gareth Branch (1993–1995).
