Arsenal’s move for Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães looks to be in its final stretch. However, there is still some confusion over exactly where things stand.
Reports in England suggested theNewcastle United midfielder had already completed his medical on Wednesday. ESPN Brazil journalist Bruno Andrade, however, says that simply wasn’t possible.
Andrade, who has consistently reported on the negotiations throughout the saga, insists Bruno only arrived in England late on Wednesday after travelling from Spain. So there wasn’t enough time to go through the usual medical procedures.
According to him, the transfer itself is no longer the issue. What’s left now is completing the medical and signing the paperwork. Then Arsenal can officially unveil one of the biggest signings of the summer.
Medical first, then the announcement
Speaking on ESPN, Andrade said he was happy to stand by the information he has been reporting over the last few days. He was the one who claimed the deal was already done by the weekend.
“A lot of people reported yesterday that he had already had his medical, or was going to have it in London,” he said. “I can only stand by my own information and the people I’ve spoken to.”
According to Andrade, Bruno Guimarães travelled from Spain to England late on Wednesday, so there simply wasn’t enough time to complete the usual medical tests.
Instead, those checks are scheduled for Thursday, with the contract expected to be signed afterwards.
The journalist also confirmed news regarding Guimarães’ contract. Rather than a straight five-year agreement, Bruno is expected to sign for four years with the option of a fifth.
There could be even more money involved
Bruno Andrade also revisited the financial side of the deal. He continues to work with a package worth around €92.8m (£80m). However, he believes the final value could end up being even higher.
“There are a lot of details involved in this transfer and many bonuses that Newcastle are not planning to make public,” he explained.
“I’ve spoken to people who took part in the negotiations, and there is actually more money involved in the agreement between the clubs.”
For now, though, he says €92.8m (£80m) remains the right figure to use. Even if some of the bonus clauses have yet to become public.
Newcastle United exit ends on good terms
Despite how long the transfer saga has dragged on, Andrade insists the relationship between Bruno Guimarães and Newcastle United has remained positive throughout.
The midfielder had already informed the club during last season that he wanted to move this summer. Newcastle’s failure to qualify for the Champions League only strengthened that desire.
That also ties in with Andrade’s earlier reporting. He said Newcastle had privately agreed to make a transfer easier if the club missed out on Europe’s top competition.
Even so, he says there has never been a falling-out. Bruno Guimarães arrived when Newcastle were fighting relegation. He helped steer them away from danger, then played a leading role in taking the club into the Champions League twice.
According to Andrade, he also became one of the biggest modern figures in Newcastle United’s history. The No.39 shirt now ranks among the club’s best-selling ever.
The number itself carries personal meaning. Bruno has worn No.39 throughout his career as a tribute to his father Dick, a taxi driver from his hometown in Brazil whose cab carried that number. Andrade even believes there’s a good chance Bruno will ask to keep No.39 at Arsenal.
If the latest information from Brazil is accurate, as has often seemed to be the case throughout this saga, Arsenal now have very little left to do.
The medical, the signature and the presentation are all that stand between Bruno Guimarães and becoming Arsenal’s newest player.
